Wake Up, Parents – Our Kids Deserve Better
Let’s get real for a minute.
Everywhere you go, parents are crying about the rising cost of living.
“We don’t have money to invest in our children’s future,” they say.
But the truth is harsh — we do have the money.
We're just spending it on the wrong things.
Let’s break it down.
We’ve normalized spending thousands of rands every month on entertainment and lifestyle luxuries:
-
Netflix
-
Disney+
-
Showmax
-
DStv for the sport lovers
-
High-speed fibre or uncapped mobile data
People are walking around with the latest iPhones, paying R1,000 to R1,500 per month, just to keep up with appearances. But when it’s time to invest in school fees, a tutor, or after-school programs — suddenly, “there’s no money.”
And don’t even get me started on gambling.
Hollywoodbets, Betway, Lotto — people are throwing away cash daily, chasing luck, while ignoring the real jackpot right in front of them: their child’s future.
At the end of the month, it’s like a festival.
Restaurants packed. Takeaways every weekend.
Month-end drinks, “just to relax.” Parties like there’s no tomorrow.
But next week we’re borrowing money for school shoes, stationery, or bus fare.
Let’s talk straight to the smokers and drinkers.
Here’s a challenge: calculate what you spend on cigarettes and alcohol per year.
Be honest. Then ask yourself — how many terms of private school could that cover?
How many months of university tuition?
You’ll be shocked.
We’re not saying don’t enjoy life. But where are your priorities?
Just imagine what we could do if we sacrificed a little.
-
Cut down one or two subscriptions
-
Eat out less
-
Say no to that next bottle
-
Downgrade your phone plan
Suddenly, private education becomes affordable.
A good tutor becomes possible.
Your child’s dream university is no longer a fantasy.
We say we want the best for our children — now is the time to prove it.
Not with words.
With action.
With sacrifice.
With focus.
This comes as advice, not from a bad heart, but from a place of truth and love.
As a parent myself, I know the importance of education.
I’ve seen what it can do for a child’s future — and I’ve seen what happens when we don’t prepare.
Please, take this message seriously.
Let’s wake up. Let’s do better. For our children.
