From Eight Learners to a Growing School

Image
Three years ago, our school began with a simple but powerful dream. We started small — just 8 learners and 2 teachers — driven by faith, determination, and the belief that something meaningful could grow from humble beginnings. Today, as we look back, we are filled with gratitude and awe. In just three short years, we have grown to over 60 learners . With this rapid growth came challenges that required us to learn quickly — not only academically, but administratively, financially, and structurally. There was no luxury of time; every decision mattered, and every step required courage. Within this short space of time, we achieved what once felt impossible. We purchased our own grounds and erected temporary classrooms, laying the foundation for a future we once only imagined. When we reflect on the obstacles we faced, many now seem small compared to how much we accomplished. The journey was demanding, but it was worth every sacrifice. Most importantly, we celebrate the many suc...

We Are Losing Our Teachers — And With Them, Our Future

Image
We Are Losing Our Teachers — And With Them, Our Future By Mr Aspeling In today’s education landscape, a quiet crisis is unfolding. It’s not just about curriculum changes, digital transformation, or exam results. It is about the teachers who are walking away from the profession , burned out, discouraged, undervalued, and often blamed for problems they did not create. And while we debate learner rights, policies, and schooling models, no one speaks about the teachers who stand at the centre of it all . A Country Losing Its Educators South Africa is already feeling the impact. Reports over the last few years reveal that more than 30 000 teachers have left public schools , with resignations rising and replacements struggling to keep up. In the Western Cape alone, over 1 200 teachers quit in a single year , while thousands of qualified teachers remain unemployed. Stress, administrative overload, and low morale are cited as key drivers — not simply salary concerns. Globally, UNESC...

Picnic Friday Social 🏫🌿

Picnic Friday Social 🏫🌿 Our first Picnic Friday for 2026 was a wonderful success! At Aspeling High, we believe that learning happens best in a joyful, healthy, and supportive environment. Today’s social brought our learners together in a relaxed space, encouraging friendship, kindness, and a strong sense of community. Why Socialising in Schools Matters Social interactions are a vital part of child development. When learners spend time together in safe spaces, they learn how to communicate, collaborate, share, solve problems, and build confidence. Positive social experiences help students develop empathy and emotional maturity — qualities that carry beyond the classroom and into their futures. School is not only about academics; it is also a place where young people learn who they are and how to connect with others. The Importance of Safety in Schools Today In today’s world, a school must be more than just an institution for education — it must be a safe haven. Learners t...

Why More South African Parents Are Choosing Private Schools: Safety — Not Just Academic Results

Image
Why More South African Parents Are Choosing Private Schools: Safety — Not Just Academic Results For many years, parents focused mainly on academic performance when choosing a school. Today, that conversation has changed. Across South Africa, parents are increasingly asking a far more urgent question: “Will my child be safe at school?” Safety is no longer a secondary concern. For many families, it has become the deciding factor. The Reality: School Safety Is a Growing Concern News headlines and official reports continue to highlight serious safety challenges in South African schools, particularly within overcrowded government schools. Bullying, violence, intimidation, substance abuse, and lack of supervision are no longer isolated incidents — they are becoming more frequent. Thousands of bullying cases are reported nationally each year, and many more go unreported. In some cases, bullying has escalated into physical assault, stabbings, and long-term emotional trauma for l...

Wow… What a Year!

Wow… What a Year! As we reach the final stretch of 2025, we can’t help but pause, breathe, and take in everything we’ve been through. Tired? Yes. Drained? Absolutely. But overwhelmingly… grateful. This year came with more than its fair share of madness, challenges, and unexpected turns — yet here we are. We pulled through. First and foremost, we give thanks to God for guiding us and allowing us to cross one of our biggest milestones yet: We officially moved onto our own school grounds. After months of chaos, planning, packing, uncertainty, and transition, we can finally say we have a place to call home. A space that belongs to us — a new chapter for our school’s future. To our parents: Thank you. Your unwavering support, patience, and commitment during the move kept us going. You stood by us in every challenge, and we truly appreciate you. To our learners: You were the heart of this move. Your excitement, adaptability, and positive energy made the entire process bri...

Bullying in Schools: A Growing Concern

Image
Bullying in Schools: A Growing Concern Bullying in schools has become a hot topic — and sadly, it’s happening far too often. We need to understand that our children are no longer babies. As parents, educators, and as a school community, we all have a responsibility to address bullying regularly through open talks, workshops, and awareness campaigns. However, it starts at home. Parents need to have honest conversations with their children about the laws of our country and the consequences that come with bullying. Many young people don’t realize that bullying — especially on social media — can follow them for the rest of their lives. What might feel like “standing up for what’s right” in the moment can, in reality, be a criminal offense. We must listen when a child cries out for help — whether it’s your own child or another being bullied daily at school. Even if it seems small, never ignore it. If your child mentions something, contact the school immediately. Nothing about bully...
